I almost always carry a pistol, but in many places you can't carry even long rifles, like at national parks and many state/national forest. The reason being is because of illegal poachers, not because anti gun stuff.. Also in a case like this he was asleep a gun would of made zero difference.
A few weeks ago there was a case where a kid shot and killed a bear that was about to attack their group. There was 3 or 4 people in that group and they all had rifles.. The bear attack was so fast that none of the adults were able to get their guns off their shoulders to fire fast enough. They said the only reason the kid was able to do it, was because he didn't have a shoulder strap and was carrying his gun in his hands..
Meaning yes guns can save your life but you might not always have the chance to use it.
