by all indications the japanese military was defeated prior to bombing hiroshima and nagasaki.
there have been several books discussing why truman felt compelled to use the nuclear weapons as a signal to the russians that the US was going to assert itself in Europe after the war.
that really had to suck for the innocent civilians in those cities, huh?
