The loose term for this in the scam world is called "fencing" or "money mule", this is a variation of that.
The fact that Brian didn't inform you of others involved in your transaction is a red flag.
The fact he didn't deliver what was promised is a red flag.
The fact that unforseen circumstances happened when time to deliver is a red flag.
The fact he no longer has the money is a red flag.
