Wikipedia has always requested donations. There are links all over the site and at least one time a year they do a nice big push for donations.
This is nothing new.
Wikipedia needs to remain free. He is right. Ads will destroy it. A small donation is worth the benefit that everyone receives from Wikipedia. I check it at least three times a week for quick information.
