It is best handled on a one on one basis on icq or via email so that it isn't just generic advice but advice and help tailored to your interests and the skills you feel you have.
However, on the generic side I would explain the two avenues open to you - our adult products and the products that do well in the mainstream. I would then take whatever time it takes to show you how to make and promote mainstream sites that convert.
On the adult side I would explain either TGP or AVS to you (and I have done this btw..do it all the time...taken new webmasters and taken the time to tell them what an avs is, how to build them, etc) and the ways we have found are best to use those to advertise our products within those medias.
As you said you are starting from scratch I wouldn't really go into promoting us via your own paysite but if you had one of those I would go down that route too.
It is also in the follow up care. I want all of our affiliates to know that they can contact me with any questions they have. If they need a banner or other advertising material we don't have they can just contact me and I will get it done for them. This just happened the other day with someone that was promoting our weight loss products on a wedding site and needed a banner that featured a bride.
I am not bothered about if someone's questions take five minutes to answer or two hours. If I help someone to earn money obviously it is going to help our company. Not just in the obvious way of them making money for us through those sales but if you help someone who is starting out usually that breads a slight sense of loyalty.
If you get the 'hey it isn't my job to hold your hand' attitude then why should you bother? Actually, I am affiliate support and yes, it is my job to hold your hand.
