Putin is basically not disliked by the wealthy elites in the US, its only the neo-cons, military and deep state who think the US is exceptional and should eliminate every threat to its supremacy which is something they can proliferate by essentially brainwashing the uneducated americans into believing.

Wall street basically is very pro Russia so it doesn't surprise me Trump's position, its not unusual among business people who see Putin and Russia as a lot more moderate than the US government.

Will this help avoiding MAD (mutually assured destruction)? Probably not because too much momentum and inertia is built up, mainly by the US, to provoke Russia into a conflict or at least make it highly (and justifiably) defensive.
