Sounds to me like you loaded the FHG in an iframe?
So every user who came into the site was cookied?
I would suggest you do as you mentioned and even load the full join form in the page, that will cookie everyone again.
And SELL the sponsor, tell everyone how good it is, have a call to action, a special deal or something to get users to click on it.
