If you work at IBM they have a system where they look at your ideas via a submission system -- and they will get the patent if they think it's a good idea -- and you get some % of the profits I think. Cool shit. You can make a lot of money like this -- but the team of IBM lawyers basically does all the hard work -- and sometimes they trade patents with other companies -- kindof like baseball cards for the big boys
