While the software and hardware to do this at the moment, I do not think it would be long before you could purchase this as a low cost commercial price.
I could see gamers wanting it so they could scan themselves into computer games, so when your fighting someone in a game linked to the web, you would see what they look like for real.
Of course the big problem is going to be for models, as once they are scanned in. You do not need to scan them ever again as the digitized 3d version of them can them be put in all VR software porn you ever make.

I would imagine that scanning software is not cheap and you need some pretty impressive hardware to run it. Like you say, that will change. I just wonder how long it will be.
Personally, I think the future of VR is going to be POV semi-interactive videos (think the choose your own adventure stories where you select the scenario or what you want to do during the scene then it happens) working with a device or devices that are connected to your computer that will stimulate your body as the action happens. If you could lay back on your couch, dick a motorized fleshlight kind of thing, probes on your nipples to stimulate them and go through a semi-interactive scene with your favorite pornstar it would be a hell of an experience. I think we are pretty close to having the technology available and affordable for something like this.
