I believe these middle eastern countries are never really fully in control of their country. They might control the major cities, but outside of that they have very little control. Pakistan and Afghanistan are good examples of this. And this is where these extremists operate - and thrive.
What happened in Germany (and Europe) and Japan will not work in the Middle East.

I don't consider America's handling of post WWII Japan and Germany as nation building, they were powerful, educated, advanced countries who had a history of democracy, the US helped them to rebuild infrastructure and reform their society to some form of democracy. That success sent a wrong message to American politicians, that nation building could succeed in any country.
