I certainly agree that preselling is important when sending to join pages. I like the fact that pre-selling also creates more text on my pages for the search engines.
I prefer to get 5 more pageviews on my sites with possible bookmarks & clicks to join pages rather than 5 pageviews to one sponsor tour. This helps to keep the control of the traffic in my hands instead of a sponsor's hands.

Over time I think that helps me end up with more traffic/pageviews which results in higher revenue overall.
