I thought I had a great vocabulary until I went to lunch with a grade school friend. He had worked for IBM & The Federal Reserve. He showed me a magazine write up about him.
I understood the words and terms, "the & and." It was something about customer centered concentric databases, or something like that.

Yes canonical tagging is now mandatory in order to avoid duplicates. Basically , canonical tag tells google bot which version of your page is real and should receive seo juice.
For example, you could have domain.com/index.php but someone made a link to your site in form of domain.com/index.php?tracker=blabla so then you have two identical pages, hence the reason why you need to tell google how domain.com/index.php is real page.
