It doesn't have to be a ghost. It can be an easter egg.
Consider Marvel movies - they are full of easter eggs that sharp viewers find and talk about online which generate repeat viewings. Sometimes VFX artists "sign" their work in plain-view too.
You don't need a big budget to make easter eggs either. Any message as a nod to the viewer can be appreciated and shared. A model can have some product placement or URL to her website. A director can have his or her own symbol that can appear on props as his signature, etc.
