Kasich isn't going anywhere until at least the Pennsylvania primary on April 26. He has spent a lot of time and money there and is currently neck in neck with Cruz in the polls for second place, but still double digits behind Trump.
I think he feels like if he can somehow win Pennsylvania it will derail both Trump and Cruz from getting enough delegates to win the nomination outright and put him in a position where he can negotiate himself into a VP slot.
