If the GOP did that, they would tear apart their party and you can bet Drumpf would then run as an Independent crushing any chance at all of a Republican win.
What something like this will come down to, is would they rather have Hillary as the president or Drumpf. If they try to steal the nomination away from Drumpf if he still hold the majority support, then it would certainly give Hillary the win.
Nothing would surprise me at this point though because the Democrat party has pretty much screwed Sanders out of any chance of the nomination by opening working hand and hand with Hillary.

I do not know too much about the nomination process; I am usually too busy to pay much attention to it. I usually wait until we have the final candidates and then decide.
Can the GOP really say "Trump won, but we have decided to go with someone else".
More importantly, have they ever done that before in the past?
At this point, I do not see how the Republican party is going to reclaim the White House. If Trump gets the nomination, the polls all say he will loose to Hillary (by eight points, although obviously a lot can change before November). If the GOP does not give Trump the nomination, it would split the party with a large enough percentage voting for Trump no matter what ensuring the Republicans do not win the White House.
