Having lived through the 50s and 60s 8mm, then VHS and - well you know the rest of the story... I would have to say that you cater to whom you want to sell to in today's market....from a WM viewpoint.
From the viewpoint of the surfer - if you are catering to people born in the 80s and up - they are trained from infancy to have stuff be "disposable". Which is why tubes and other mega free shit works so well.
If you are going after the older generation (and in most cases higher spenders) you work a little harder at scene setup, storyline, etc as that is what gets the repetitive dollars
