Is the public so desperate in wanting a great Star Wars movie that they are willing to look the other way when the know they are being fed the exact same movie they already saw in 1977? The producers, writers and director have the entire galaxy to explore and create new stories and all they came up with are copied premises from Star Wars IV? I so wanted to enjoy this new release, but the moment that pilot placed the "secret information" into the droid BB8, I knew right then and there this film was in trouble. Yes, the film had it's moments, but the stolen and repeated premises from past films outweighed the original moments.
What a waste of production all due to the ego of the writers, producers and the director who all think the movie audience is stupid and will accept anything they create or copy.
Here are the scenes and premises directly plagiarized:
1) The main planet Jakuu, is identical to Tatooine in SW IV and SW I, same moisture farms and overall look.
2) Pilot puts secret info in the droid (BB8) and the "New Order" is looking for it. Taken from SW IV, when Leia puts info in R2D2 and the Empire is looking for it.
3) When Rey meets BB8 in Jakuu desert, the conversation of "Go away, don't follow me, go that way" is the same conversation C3PO and R2D2 had when landed on Tatooine's desert.
4) Yet another bar scene full of aliens, similar to SW IV famous bar scene and already repeated in SW II.
5) Rey picks up light saber in basement of bar and visits the Dark Side, similar to Luke entering the underground tree area in SW V, when Yoda told him the Dark Side of the Force is strong there.
6) Keeping BB8 safe and trying to smuggle him off the planet, same premise in SW IV, getting the droids off the planet.
7) BB8 uses 3D projection to show the secret plans he's carrying, identical scene in SW IV, where R2D2 projects Leia talking about the plans inside the the R2 unit.
8) The Falcon is flying inside the tight area inside the wrecked Star Destroyer, similarly done in SW VI, flying thru the 2nd Death Star.
9) Finn shoots down the TIE fighters in the same fashion as Luke did, a nervous newbee, in SW IV.
10) New Order captures Rey and now good guys have to rescue her. Exact same premise in SW IV with Princess Leia.
11) Note: Darth Vader wears the mask so he can breath, but why does Kylo Ren wear a mask when he can easily take it off? A fashion statement?
12) New Order (The old Empire) has yet ANOTHER Death Star. Aren't there any new weapons in the galaxy that can stand up to a dozen X-wing fighters? Same premise in SW IV and in SW VI. Enough Death Stars!
13) Rey running thru the Death Star corridors and is stopped short by deep internal chasm, similar to Luke and Leia before they swing across it.
14) Rey has to turn off force field, similar to Ben Kenobi turning off tractor beams so Falcon can escape.
15) The whole "father and son" routine was already done in SW V. Now it's Han Solo's turn for a father/son conflict? Hideous and shameless writing.
16) Opinion: Han Solo's death was 100% meaningless. Killed arbitrarily by his son, for what seems to be non disclosed emotional reasons because Han is not a Jedi and no threat to his son. Is this the way an iconic Han Solo exits? "Hey son, come with me and be good again... No! Boom, your dead." That's it? Han should've died sacrificing his life saving people, saving Chewy or the Leia, something noble and worthy of his death. But getting wiped out by his snot nosed kid? That wouldn't happen to the real Han Solo.
17) Rebels flying down the trenches of the new Death Star (planet) with the same laser turrets firing at them. Exact scenes in SW IV.
18) Repeat of the same huge explosion at the end of the movie, already done in SW IV and SW VI. Writers can't figure out how to end a movie without an explosion.
19) When news of Han dying reaches Leia, she barely sheds a tear. Almost no reaction to losing the love of her life.
20) Luke Skywalker didn't speak in the film and was on camera for about 12 seconds, yet he is 2nd in the film's credits? False advertising.
Star Wars VII is the biggest unoriginal film in the series. The acting and effects are top notch, but where is the original story? The producers have access to the best writers in the industry and all they can come with are story lines stolen from previous Star Wars movies? The fans don't need an homage to Star Wars IV, we want a brand new Star Wars film. Yes, combine the old with the new, but is it too much to ask to have a new story, other than, "these aren't the droids we're looking for?" I weep for the fans that have been royally screwed over. They think Jar Jar Binks was bad? But at least Lucas gave us original episodes, unlike this un original film geared directly at 9 year olds that can't remember the story from Star Wars IV.
Shame on the creators of this film for destroying a phenomenal franchise and turning out a film slapped together from stolen pieces of prior films.
It's worse than cannibalism. It's more like a cannibal eating himself and the audience buying a ticket to witness it.
"A film needs more than just special effects, it's needs a story." -George Lucas
Most kids from 5 to 12, won't really remember the story lines in Star Wars IV, but for everybody else, it's a huge disappointment these writers couldn't come up with ANYTHING ORIGINAL that moved the story forward in a new and exciting direction. This movie was just one simple start up, but we didn't need a start up, we already have 6 prior films!!! Bring on the goods!!! Bring on the new stories!!!! There was a million ways they could've gone and didn't go anywhere. I think when the dust settles of all the glam and excitement, the truth will come out and this film will be chalked up as the biggest Star Wars failures. BTW, I am an original Star Wars fan from 1977 and this plagiarized film broke my heart. It's a corporate "play is safe" and "make what sells" production, not an original and exciting science fiction film.
