Watching those videos the one may say they are just circus clowns who uses a head to break glass bottles and bricks and sleep wit AK-47. I would say so as well if I didn't know who they are.
Russian paratroopers (VDV) are
amateur forces. They are not professionals. They learn the military science for one year only. They are not paid for that, in contrast to the USA which spends a lot of money to pay the salary to their soldiers.
Russian paratroopers were the first in Kosovo before the NATO KFOR guys.
Russian paratroopers
were supporting FSB Alpha to kill Amin in 1979.
Russia has used VDV paratroopers to fight Afghani mujaheddins. They just wee dropped on heads of Afghani fighters from helicopters. Usually such a battle was ended in seconds. Afghani mujaheddins have no tactic to fight back Russian paratroopers. Those guys just killed them immediately. The situation has changed when mujaheddins got the US Stingers and they were able to shoot down Russian helicopters with all paratroopers inside. We've got a big loses in the air. Totally the Soviet Union has lost about 15,000 of soldiers at that war.
You may think that Russian VDV spends too much time for training martial arms (рукопашный бой), but that's not correct. Everybody knows that a soldier has to shoot well but not to do boxing with an enemy. This is absolutely correct. But war is a very dirty and ugly thing. When you get shot into face and can stand on your legs, you have to complete your mission. Have no riffle? Go cut the throat of your enemy with your teeth. That's they are thought to do and world of pain during the training is their way to survive in the real fight.
I want to underline it: VDV are not professionals. They are just regular Russian guys, because every man here must to do a military service. Course Russia has a real pros. Those are Spetsnaz. According to the US intelligence, about 30,000 of them are ready to be dropped into any place on the Earth after a nuclear attack to finish the survivors. Spetsnaz are being paid for their service and you won't find their faces on youtube... because they are Spetsnaz
P.S. I saw a lot of videos of the NATO special forces (e.g. the British ones). Those are professionals, but they are being trained w/o a battle uniform and they are using a soft tatami. Russian amateur VDV soldiers do it on
asphalt because there will be no tatami on the war.
