mythology in any culture is less prevalent when food, safety and survival are less of an issue. Look at India as an example, a "guru" on every corner, doing easily explainable "tricks" and being treated as if they are touched by god himself. though a lie, hope also keeps people going. beliefs give people purpose. beliefs give people a sense of meaning to their lives.
If you want to cure the middle east, you have to cure their economies, their habits, their cultures etc. If you've done so poor in life as a society that religion has such strong roots, it can often be what then holds back progress. A culture where men derive their purpose from their service to a religion or god is not going to thrive in the same way that one where men derive their purpose from financial success, innovation and achievement.
