DAKAR, Senegal — Gunmen stormed a Radisson Blu hotel on Friday morning in Bamako, the capital of the West African nation of Mali, seizing scores of hostages and leaving bodies strewn across parts of the building.
A senior United Nations official said that as many as 27 people had been killed, with bodies found in the basement and on the second floor, according to a preliminary assessment of the devastating attack.

Why wasn't that hotel immediately flooded with tear gas, smoke grenades or some sleeping gas agent? When governments are incompetently slow to react these things happen. Mali has been a ''war zone'' for years and its police and military should have been much faster to react. The hotel occupants were probably not war zone tourists but persons doing business in a war zone -- and unarmed.
Another soft target and a recipe for disaster.
