There's no such thing as a moderate Syrian Leader. The country is split into many warring groups. This was identified as a reason not to intervene as there's no possible post war plan that's workable.
Putin realises this and would rather have his despot in power, than a repeat of Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan and others, where the Americans thought they knew best.
