I think you mean confirmed opt-in.
'Double Opt in' was a term (as far as I know) created by the Direct Marketting Association.. possibly to make it seem like a backbreaking process to 'double opt in an email'. The correct term should be confirmed opt-in.

Confirmation is as much of a standard today as me drinking my coffee at 4am in the morning... (ok bad example)
As long as we are being intelligent about this, I figured I would post these interesting facts for you, instead of the obvious 'flooding email boxes with crap is wrong'
Hope you plan on sending the emails morally, without harrassing people, and provide an obvious way for end users to stop receiving the email
