I think that sums up a lot. By taking in an animal as a pet.. you are taking responsibility for it. That pet is not some fish or cow for eating, it is being taken into your lifestyle. The cat does not have a true choice over this... no pet really does, but owners usually treat their pet as part of the family and recognise its value as a living being, or as a true member of the family. In return, the pet likes it in its home and generally seems to recoginze itself as part of the family too.
Taking responsibility of it, does not mean you can bring in an animal to abuse it. These are not punching bags, these are pets... they provide an emtional support equivelent, or sometimes greater than a friend, a mother, a brother, etc... Some may disagree. and of coarse everyone shares a different relationship with their pets... I have a dog, who happens to be one of my best friends/family ever... always will be, even after she passes on. I can't even start to imagine her as a punching bag! Thats sick! I consider my lack of understand for the those sick fews of
pets as normal... and consider people with extremely alternative views relating more to pets being things you can just shove around and do whatever you want to as.. well, COMPLETELY FUCKED UP! They have feelings, they are a part of YOUR family the second you take them in. Hell yea they are your responsibility. Pets can suffer developemental damage, fear from abuse.. etc etc. much alike people. My dog was abused when it was much younger. I got her when she was 2 or 3... from a pound. She had been abondoned. Any time I would raise my hand beyond the height of my shoulder... for any reason whatsoever, she would flinch... and bow down and inch away from me... had no clue why for a few weeks, then realized the obvious. She was scared, and would probably have that problem for a while. Well, its been roughly 7 years... and she no longer has that problem... why? a good family.. ME!

She has many many social differences since the day I took her in. This just proves the similaries of a pet to say... a kid growing up... or, just anyone in general who has a rough history. THEY ARE NOT PUNCHING BAGS AND NOT THINGS YOU HUNT FOR FOOD!
I was horrified of the story... especially because I went out all day to spend time with my dog at a park. I can't imagine how it was for you.. seeing all of this happen lol. Still a little shocked?
