If I understand correctly, the judge told Donnie there would be no way he could come back after the trial and say "lack of legal representation" - The risks were explained to him.

I get the feeling that Donny feels he will be able to get the girls on the stand and get them to tell everyone that they made the whole thing up or he will be able to put himself on the stand and explain how this is all a big misunderstanding.
One thing is for sure, there is a reason even seasoned attorneys don't represent themselves in cases. Donny's ship was already sinking, this is like him blowing a hole in the bottom of the boat.
