I think firing his attorney shortly before his trial is the worst possible thing he can do.
I am guessing this is a court appointed attorney. I can imagine a court appointed attorney is not going to be the best "money could buy". But I don't think he'll get a better attorney, and surely this cannot hurt his case.

The only logic I can see for firing his attorney two weeks before trial is to get a delay in the trial. He gets a new attorney, who needs time to review his case and prepare his defense, and that can't truly get done in less than two weeks. So, essentially, he's just buying himself time.
