I've always used Outlook or Outlook express for handling my mail, and I have the "rules" set to route spam straight into the shit bin. Out of every 100 emails that make it to my inbox, I would say only about 20 of them are spam now, whereas before setting the rules it was more like 80 were spam.
Set some rules to filter out words like "Viagra", "remove", "removal", "unsubscribe" etc etc and you should see a dramatic drop in the amount of spam in your inbox.
Then just skim over your "Deleted Items" bin for any legitimate emails that might have mistakenly been caught, then hit "empty deleted items folder" and your spam is dealt with in one shot. It used to take me an hour to get through my morning mail.... now I tear through it in about 10 minutes.
