Like I said, it converts so at the end of the day, that's all that matters. But from a surfer's perspective, you do lose some legitimate clickers who would have signed up but decide to leave when they feel deceived into clicking on what appears to be a "preview" clip only to redirect to a join page. That's just leaving money on the table.
I don't agree with the notion that Trailers can kill a site. Trailers if done correctly can draw more potential customers to sign up to a site. You can have a nice Join page underneath the preview video which is not intrusive but it's there with the trailer.
Here is an example Digital Playground. Look how flawlessly the preview clip is and join page is integrated together. Absolutely a work of art to draw potential customers to join up
