True story...

Had a dog when I was a kid that was hit by a mail truck. Vets said the spine damage was permanent and the dog would have to be put down. My mom wanted a second, third, then fourth opinion if there were any other ways to go. The last vet suggested acupuncture which in the early 80s was still considered "quack" medicine.

It saved the dog's life.

And although it was a smart dog, I guarantee that it had no pre-conditioned presumptive therapeutic empathetic response to the treatment.
