This wasn't a myth. And I don't know the name of the neighborhood. We were actually shooting a scene and wanted to do the set up to the scene (non-nude, just storyline) at a local park.
So we went out of the area with all the skyscrapers and just went into an area that had neighborhoods with small houses, convenience stores, etc.
Looked like it could have been any town in the U.S.
And the guy who was taking us around told us we couldn't shoot a couple of blocks over because of that kind of racism on the part of the black people there.
I'm sure that folks who live in NYC could comment on that better than I can. It was kind of shocking to me at the time because I'm from the South originally. And having lived in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina...I had never run into that kind of thing before even though the Southern States are thought of as the most racist.
Hell, when I lived in Atlanta...I was the minority.
