Harleys are good, but somewhat expensive
My bike is a Victory Vegas, 1500cc, fuel injected, and was only $18,112 total out the door. Its hard to find a new Harley close to that price. But the thing with harleys, you can find good used ones for thousands less than new ones, and still in great condition.
Big Dog Motorcycles are pretty good to, and look great. Price starts around $23k. Get a rubber-mount one if you plan on taking long road trips.

Red Horse bikes are nice to and start around $21k

And of course you can get a good cruiser from any of the jap companies for around $10k and under. Its ok to get a jap bike, people may look at you funny, but I doubt anyone will say you cant ride with them. Bikers are generaly very friendly towards other bikers. Plus the jap bikes are normaly very reliable and smooth running machines. And if you are just learning to ride a jap bike is a good start, since they are less expensive.
Riding to florida from texas wouldnt suck, it would be great

Your problems all seem to go away when you're riding your bike. And a bike is cheaper than therapy
