Russia has lost a lot of ground since the 1990s; Most of the former Soviet Bloc countries no longer align themselves with Russia. East Germany no long exists, and Czechoslovakia has shed it's history with Russia and now calls itself the Czech Republic. Poland has obviously distanced itself, as has Hungary. Even Cuba no longer relies on Moscow for support, and is quickly trying to be friendly with the United States.
The Internet has shown the rest of the world how other countries live; In many ways the Internet has eliminated propaganda. This was most evident in Berlin after German reunification - The standards of living between West Berlin and East Berlin were staggering.
As far as military might.... Russia might have an endless amount of cannon fodder as they did in the 1940s. However, that was a long time ago and cannon fodder does not win war on it's own. Russia can barely get a single military ship and a support ship to Cuba, while the United States is operating in the deep waters of every ocean simultaneously and has been for decades.
Nuclear warfare is irrelevant at this point. It worked for the United States with Japan, but only because no other country had such technology and even if they did, they did not have the ability to deploy it against the United States. Russia could nuke Washington DC, but the United States would have the ability to instantly retaliate - Washington DC would be destroyed, but so would Moscow.
