ISIL control a large chunk of Syria and Iraq. The current strategy of combining air strikes with locally trained shi'ite militia is only going to deepen the problem.
Despite the awesome air power of coalition countries, these sand people have managed to hold on to some of the most strategically desirable locations. They already control Anbar provence, this gives them perfect supply lines back to Syria.
I don't know what the solution is, but this conflict will lead to the redrawing of the maps of the middle east.
