It's a ride that no one wants to get off of. A timeless classic.
The top nation in the pecking power order of nations acts as imperialistic as ever. It's people wonder why other people hate them.
The people in the runner up nations in the great power game turn to such vague ideas as "culture" and "sophistication" and claim that theirs is better and, more importantly, that the top nations is inferior. "You may have wealth and power, but you don't have X". They act alarmed both as individuals and in their press until it reaches their leaders and they turn beligerent.
Everyone begins to hate each other. Everyone hides behind such phrases as "I like the people but not the leaders". This puts increasing pressure on the top nation to either change and conform or strike out. Either response is usually surprising.
Will this end like USSR/US/Europe with the Soviet citizens and the people of the Soviet Republics finally standing up and saying "We want to be more like them!" or will end up like World War I did with all the hatred of decades of negative thoughts and press towards each other?
No cause. No effect. Just action and reaction.
The same old song. The same old dance.
