Wouldn't we be better served to instead have them spend their summers working (maybe as interns or for a low wage) for companies that are in the field they are studying? For example, if they are studying to be an engineer, have them work somewhere like Intel, HP or some other tech company. They do low level intern type work, but they are exposed to what they are learning about and might get to be involved in some cool stuff that is actually in their field.
This way when they graduate they have some real world work experience in their chosen field which will help them get that good job.
