Rick has been just barely holding on for awhile, remember he was completely delusional having imaginary phone conversations at the jail?
But even so I don't think he acted very irrationally, he was holding it together till the guy came at him, I don't know what else he could have done except lose the fight maybe? I mean sure he didn't get too many brownie points for the insane speech, but who can do good PR while high on adrenaline kicking someone's ass and getting smacked around a fair bit in return?
I think Michonne was just diffusing the situation the best she could in the short term since the more he ran his mouth the more he was freaking everyone out, even though he was technically correct about everything.
