I had this happen to me once when a friend/editor died of cancer in 2011. By luck I found his username to his registrar on the browser history of the editing rig he used. He also had his email address auto password saved. Having those bits of info I was able to transfer it out & keep things going. But yea.. I know the feeling. It's like someone forgetting to give you the keys to the cabin in Tahoe they let you use for the summer.
