The main difference is that all Russian "hot" regions are at about the same latitude as the US "cold" ones. We don't have equivalents of Florida, Alabama or Arizona. Russian climate is very extreme. In the continental area ("
средняя полоса") you may have -35 during winter and +35 during summer (in calcium). And yes, a lot of Russians live there (note the link above). Others live in even much colder places like Surgut, Severodvinsk, Norilsk, Murmansk etc.
