As far as I understand, that area you lived at it's pretty warm thru the year, and, most likely houses don't have central heating but rather AC that could also warm it up thru the winter if there is any in our understanding...
So, long term 2 bedroom renting ( 6 months + ) is essential. Don't speak Portugal, will it work or it's better to stay near Lisbon then?

In december, january and february.... 'kinda that.
People from the local stores all speak english, and if u try to speak a little italian + portuguese + english they will understand you.
