Something the Bind hater in that article forget is that in addition to his home runs, Bonds ia also the ONLY man in history to have 500+ homers and 500+ stolen bases.
Bonds RBI totals are misleading because for the first part of his career, he was a leadoff hitter and we also walks more than anyone else, so that will cut into his RBI totals.
Bonds has also done all of this in a lot less at bats (due to all of the walks). He also strikes out significantly less than babe Ruth did and Sammy Sosa does.
I'm not slamming Sammy, he's definitely earned his place as one of the elite in the game as well.
Both players have obviously gained power and strength through conditioning ad well as I'm sure performance enhancers.
I have to wonder though....would the greats like Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Ty Cobb, Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams etc. have been able to stand up to the media scrutiny that players face today?
When Babe Ruth played the sports writers were very reverent in how they treated him and his heavy partying wasn't as big of a story. If Babe Ruth played today, would he have put up the same numbers with the media pressure players have today? Would his womanizing be as accepted today as it was then?
The game has changed, but with all the greats, the numbers will always speak for themselves.
