The first time I heard a voice one was after we moved to this house. 4:30am and I hear this loud voice screaming to take cover, TORNADO! I shook the old man up and he didn't know they talked either but we discussed it as we flew down the basement steps.
I still get a kick how they would tuck us under desks or into the hall in school with your head on the floor and hunkered down. Like THAT would save you from an atomic blast!! We had them about once a week and they scared some of the kids really bad. I guess it might have helped us when we were young enough to believe we were protecting ourselves.

And as if having to dive under a desk didnt scare kids enough, a few years later they make the movie "The Day After".
Thats really when kids started shitting their knickers.. That movie really fucked up alot of kids (adults too)
