Somebody, somewhere, is going to get upset no matter what term you use. Some light-skinned people will take offense to being called "black," and African-American only applies to Americans of African descent, which besides making supposition about a persons ancestry isn't really a description of race at all. After all, Charlize Theron and Sharlto Copley are technically African-Americans.
