I use an HP Elitebook (which has every port under the sun on-board), put a Samsung Pro SSD in it and bought a HP docking station for $25 off eBay.

Having a laptop with a dock really makes all the difference. I used to have two computers but had file sync issues. I wanted to get my work down to one computer but I also wanted to grab and go.

HP Elitebook's offer great performance, the fan is not loud and is not running all the time like my spouse's i7 Vaio is. I recently switched out the optical drive for a 640 GB 2.5" hard disk I had laying around and it works great.

Best of all, everything is encrypted, my secondary drive is automatically mounted when I authenticate to the full disk encryption. I even have LoJack in the BIOS in case somebody steals it and attempts to swap the hard disk.

I have a full desktop like setup, but with laptop mobility. Dual screens, external mouse and keyboard, USB devices all automagically connected when I place this thing in the dock. Another nice thing is I never have to unplug the power cable. I actually have the original power cable in my car in case I am somewhere and need to use my laptop for an extended period of time.

Battery life is great, if you have the "on battery" power settings tweaked properly. It all comes down to use. I primarily do Linux Systems Administration so I need mobility and security verses production power.

All in all I am very happy with my HP Elitebook. We are considering a Apple Macbook Pro laptop for my spouse and I would not hesitate to invest in a Henge Dock for Macbook.
