The captors do a lot of dry runs as a form of torture. They never know when they will actually be killed, but they do know they will be severely beaten if they say the wrong thing. Many people wish for death if they get beaten badly enough. They have endless days of fear, pain, hunger and thirst, and only hatred from their captors. They question every choice they ever made that led them to this place, and begin to wonder if perhaps it is their fault.
