For years that has been the conventional notion, but about a year ago there was a paper that suggested that we were actually going over-board on the antioxidants. The gist being that oxidation is a natural process used by our immune system to remove damaged or deleterious cells. Honestly, I haven't kept track of the story to know if it has gained credence in the medical community, but I think it's fairly well accepted that we overly rely on supplements when we should instead focus on a healthy diet.
