There's one thing that fiverr has and that's traffic and these $3.84 add up quickly. Anything that involves manual labor would lead to you working for pennies, but anything that can be automated and scaled up can bring you some decent coin. I used to make easy 2k+ on fiverr with less than an hour work per day. Now you can sell services for a up to $40 a pop (I think), if that was there right from the beginning I would've been a gazillionaire.
On the other hand, you are spot-on on providing services if that's all you want to do - as long as you live in a 1st World country, local businesses is where the money is at. For instance, you can do some programming work locally for $45 per hour or you can get online and do the same work for $6.99 per hour if you are lucky.
