When I am in Amsterdam Centrum many of the bicyclists behave in an unsafe manner, including mopeds and moto guzziies using the bicycle lanes and endangering pedestrians. Several times I have come close to being run over by motorized bikes that you don't hear coming that are in the bike lanes. 20% of the bicyclists in Amsterdam peddle like arrogant idiots creating hazards to both pedestrians and vehicle traffic.
That said, the traffic is so bad in Amsterdam Centrum that bicycles are an efficient, healthy and pollution free method of transport. It's just that mixing pedestrian, public with private transport and bicycles in a crowded central city area is an accident waiting to happen. I have rarely seen a bicyclist wearing any head protection when in Amsterdam -- their choice.
