There was a woman who said she heard someone running by her window immeidately prior to hearing the nearby fight (this was the direction that Zimmerman said Trayvon ran up on him from). Then there is the guy who stepped out of his apartment and saw Trayvon on top of Zimmerman. George then screamed out to the man for help, but the guy went back into his apartment and called 911 and then heard the gunshot.
So, no, it isn't just George Zimmerman saying this stuff. The problem is that the media just repeated the "unarmed Trayvon Martin" narrative so much that people lost sight of (and in most cases didn't even know of) the eyewitnesses.
