I already gave you a good reason for telling them because they wanted to keep their tax base and/or human capital stupid and oblivious. Same reason we have countries with boarders now.
As you said most people couldn't read so they obviously would believe anything a superior and/or intellectual person would tell them. Hell billions of people believe in the religeous fairytales to this day. What's the intention behind that?
You act like everyone during those times were all monkey brained cavemen. The Egyptians can build these great pyramids that to this day baffle modern day scientist yet they couldn't figure out the earth was round and inform everyone else for thousands of years?
