You are 100% right, Russia is a truly tiny country, super overcrowded - every morning a Russian gets out of his house or apartment, he literally has to step on the head of another Russian, this is how crowded it is over there.
This is why getting more territory was exactly what the Russians needed. Screw prosperity, peace, and democracy, rattle the nukes and have your country follow the shining example of North Korea.
