It's about knowing the area, making friends, making good contacts, helping people out, and improving the community. It is not about beatings, batons, hiding out in a car. It's about walking the streets. Knowing your neighbors. Improving their lives, and in turn, they improve yours. All of these skills are what salespeople need. Entrepreneurs need. Cops need the same thing, they just don't seem to realize it.
Sadly this attitude seems to have died with the last generation of cops that have retired or are approaching retirement, at least in my area.
